If you were anywhere near Pioneer Square last night, you felt the building shaking with pure joy, deep gratitude, and unmatched community power. On June 4th, we had the absolute honor of hosting a packed house to celebrate a cornerstone of Seattle community journalism and the visionary behind Converge Media—our very own Omari Salisbury!
Last night wasn’t just a birthday party; it was a beautiful testament to what happens when lives intersect with intention. From lifelong friends to daily collaborators, the room was filled with the exact energy Colman Commons was built to hold.
The Ultimate Birthday Gift
Taking the mic, Omari shared a deeply personal milestone that brought the entire room to cheers. After a grueling eight months in the hospital, his mother officially came home the night before.
"Off tops, that’s already the best birthday ever... that my mama's back home. She's back home whole."
Knowing the fire and spirit of his mother, the collective sigh of relief and celebration from the crowd set a beautiful, emotional tone for the rest of the evening.
The Vision Behind the Space: Our Next Move
For those who don't know, Colman Commons represents a major strategic pivot for Converge Media. Last night, Omari reminded everyone exactly why this space exists. Instead of constantly chasing traditional corporate advertising and grants, Colman Commons is designed to be a self-sustaining ecosystem powered directly by the community.
By bringing people together for events, milestones, and gatherings, the funds generated here directly fuel independent, powerful Black storytelling—funding documentary films, independent television, and raw community journalism.
A massive shoutout went to Ashley McCurdy, the powerhouse who manages everything here at Colman Commons and seamlessly orchestrated last night's incredible event. As Omari put it, "She always got my back."
Honoring the Converge Family & A Historic Proclamation
The night was also about lifting up the collective. Omari took time to honor the hard-working editors and team members of the Converge Media family who serve as the "heart and soul" of the network's mission—naming key pillars like TraeAnna Holiday, Erik Kalligraphy, Deaunte Damper, Alaia D’Alessandro, Reuben Solas, Kevin Garrett, and Emilio Dominguez.
The room also stood in applause for a historic community milestone: Amarr Murphy-Paine and the Amarr's HEART Foundation. The City of Seattle officially issued a proclamation declaring June 6th as Amarr Murphy-Paine Day, a monumental recognition celebrated with a beautiful cake and immense pride from the crowd.
The Real Meaning of "Giving"
Before turning the music back up, Omari left the room with a powerful reminder about the true ethos of our community: the power of daily giving.
Giving is more than money: It's about investing your time in people.
Giving is a listening ear: Showing up and holding space for one another.
Giving is an open heart and forgiveness: Extending grace within our community networks.
Of course, in true Omari fashion, he also threw in a reminder to support the infrastructure: "Don't let all this fool you, we're still struggling to keep the internet on! Scan the QR codes, buy a t-shirt, and at the very least, tip the bartender!"
