Common Comfort: Self-Care Rituals in the Colman Commons Green Room
WATCH: Monika C. Matthews goes over 4 free self-care tips with Ashleigh McCurdy inside the Colman Commons Green Room.
Here at Colman Commons, we intentionally designed our space to be more than just a venue—we wanted it to be a sanctuary for connection, culture, and community conversations. Last Thursday, our green room became exactly that: a peaceful oasis of healing and restoration.
Before stepping onto the set of The Pop-Up!, we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming Monika C. Mathews, the brilliant founder of QueenCare, into the space. She sat down with Ashleigh McCurdy for a beautiful, heart-to-heart session centered around healing, community, and the vital importance of self-care—especially for Black women.
In this special Common Comfort at Colman Commons moment, Monika broke down four incredibly powerful self-care practices that cost absolutely nothing ($0!) but make a massive, tangible difference in your daily wellness routine.
4 Free Self-Care Techniques for Your Daily Routine
If you missed the conversation, don't worry—we’ve mapped out Monika’s essential tips so you can start practicing them today:
Saying "No" to What Doesn't Serve You: We frequently overextend ourselves by saying yes to things out of obligation. Monika reminds us that checking in with ourselves—asking if we are genuinely too tired or if our souls just aren't feeling an invitation—and simply saying "no" frees up the essential space we need to breathe.
Journaling to Release the Day: Monika gifted Ashleigh a beautiful journal, introducing it as a tool for "the release." Routines are vital, and taking a few moments every single night to write down what made you happy, mad, sad, or glad gives your emotions a safe place to go when you can't or shouldn't process them verbally with others.
The Hot Towel Reset: A remarkably simple technique that Ashleigh noted is completely underrated for pure relaxation. By dousing small hand or face towels in water as hot as you can safely stand it, wringing them out, and pressing them onto your hands, face, or the back of your neck, you instantly destress your muscles and calm your entire system down.
Everyday Aromatherapy with Intentional Scents: QueenCare products are carefully formulated with natural scents that send direct signals to your brain to relax the nervous system. After sampling an array of gorgeous options—including the airy Lilac, spa-like Cucumber Lime, grounding Sandalwood, and sweet Mango—Ashleigh chose to indulge in the feminine Rose Petals shea cream. Monika then guided her through three deep, five-second breathing cycles to lock in the aromatherapy benefits.
"Caring for ourselves is part of how we care for each other."
Watching these two incredible women connect, laugh, and pour into one another right here in our green room was a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.
